Education

Asian Human Services offers a range of services for people at all stages of learning, from the two year old in her first classroom to the senior citizen learning how to use a computer, and every age in between. Our main educational services are offered through Passages Charter School, a pre-K to 8th grade school located in the Edgewater neighborhood, and the LEAF Program, located in West Ridge, which offers ESL and computer classes for adults as well as preschool and after-school programming. We are especially committed to serving low-income immigrants from Asia and around the world.

Passages Charter School

Passages Charter School serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Focused specifically on the needs of immigrant and refugee students, Passages offers a tailored educational program focused on high academic standards and instruction based on students' individual needs. The school follows an English Immersion program model.
In 2001, Asian Human Services (AHS) was awarded a charter by Chicago Public Schools to start Passages Charter School.

    HOW IS PASSAGES DIFFERENT?
  • High Academic Standards
Every student is expected to perform at or above grade level. We follow many strategies to improve student achievement.

  • Longer School Day and School Year
Our school doors open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:55 am to 3:30 pm and on Wednesday from 7:55 am to 1:50 pm. Passages offers free morning care starting at 7 am daily and a tuition based after school program for students daily until 5:30 pm. This reassures working parents that their children are in a safe and educational environment.

  • Effective and Committed Teachers
Like our students, our diverse teaching staff comes from around the world and speaks many languages. More than seventy five percent of our teachers have post-secondary degrees, and we have strong support staff, including AmeriCorps members.

  • Small Class Size
Small student-to-teacher ratios allow for more individual attention and education that is matched to each student's needs.

  • Strong Parent Network
Passages has an active parent/teacher group that supports all school activities.

  • Connection to Social Services at AHS
All of the programs and services offered by AHS are available to Passages' families. We can assist parents with adult literacy classes, computer training, employment services, health education and medical assistance.

  • Mental Health Services
The Mental Health Program at AHS collaborates with the school to help children who are struggling to succeed.

LEAF Early Childhood

The LEAF Program has a licensed Head Start program for children ages 3-5, and a daycare for two-year-old children. We are a Chicago Public Schools-funded program in which children take part in activities designed to prepare them for preschool and kindergarten. Every day, children enjoy nutritious meals, a nap, indoor and outdoor playtime, and learn in a creative, nurturing environment. We also offer a Home Visiting program for parents with young children and pregnant mothers. This free program offers eligible families twice-monthly visits to support children’s social, emotional and cognitive growth.

From June-August, we run a summer camp for kids whose parents are enrolled in ESL programs. Children from local schools such as Clinton, Jamieson, and Stone on Chicago’s north side are matched with tutors from Loyola University’s Federal Work Study Program.
